The scene where the alien spacecraft splashes down was filmed on the western shore of Abiquiu Lake, where the reservoir meets the Rio Chama; the Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the reservoir, documented hosting about 200 cast and crew during a two-week filming stint for Cowboys & Aliens.
